Have you ever wondered what happens underwater after the sun goes down?
The thought of dipping below the surface at night seems mysterious yet so tempting. Even if you’ve been scuba diving at a site many times before, at night you drop into a whole new world and watch it come to life under the glow of your dive light. The reef changes as day creatures retire and nocturnal life emerge.
Night diving is a very different to day diving. Apart from the obvious navigational differences (you can’t see anything, except for what is illuminated by your torch light), night diving is a unique sensory experience. The ocean sounds and feels different.
During a day dive you can look around in every direction. At night you’re entirely focused on where your dive torch is pointing, and what it’s lighting up. It gives many people a better, less-distracted appreciation for what surrounds them. It helps you to spot lots of little things that can get overlooked during the day.
Many of the creatures you search for in vain during the day become active at night, swimming by when you least expect them.
There are nurse sharks hunting prey, rays gliding along the ocean floor and corals turning every color of the rainbow. Octopuses, king crabs, lobsters and squids are all coming out for a splendid night feast.
During your dive you might spot bioluminescent plankton – as you move your hand through the water, you see thousands and thousands of sparkles – this is the plankton that lights up due to chemical reaction.
Looking under corals and into crevices you may find some sleeping creatures including turtles and different kinds of fish sleeping with their eyes open. This is also a great time to see nudibranchs active in their mating ritual.
